Regulatory Impact Statement

The Minister for Workplace Relations has released a Regulatory Impact Statement on reforms to Tasmania’s Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1998. Public comment closed 11 Sept 2009.

The RIS explains the
  • objectives of the reforms
  • provides an analysis of the costs and benefits
  • explores alternative available options

The reforms follow a review of aspects of the Tasmanian workers compensation scheme by Mr Alan Clayton. The Government has accepted many of the Clayton recommendations, adapted others and included some issues that were not the subject of the review, but which arose from consultation with stakeholders. The reforms also implement a Return to Work and Injury Management Model developed by the WorkCover Tasmania Board.

It is intended that the reforms will commence from 1 July 2010. This will allow business and insurers time to adjust to the new arrangements.

There are two actuarial reports that the Government has considered in arriving at its recommended package of reforms.

These reports are supplemental to earlier actuarial advice which was released in August 2008. These reports can be located on the WorkCover Tasmania website via link below.
