Gas cylinders (including LP Gas cylinders) used or intended to be used in a workplace in Tasmania, in accordance with the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations 1998, must:
Gas cylinders that have been formally accepted and registered by another State or Territory OHS regulatory authority and have been issued with a design registration number are acceptable for use within Tasmania. That is, an application for design registration in Tasmania is not required if the design of the gas cylinder has been registered in another State or Territory.

For the definition of a ‘gas cylinder’ refer Schedule 1 – Definitions under the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations 1998.
LP Gas cylinders (including ‘gas barbecue’ cylinders) for ‘general traffic use’ or use by the public are subject to the requirements of the Dangerous Goods (General) Regulations 1998.
The regulations mandate Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1596 - The storage and handling of LP Gas, (and AS 2030 – to which LP Gas cylinders must comply).
Australian Standard AS 2030 Part 1: covers the requirements for gas cylinders for compressed gases other than acetylene. Section 6 covers the requirements that must be satisfied prior to a cylinder being filled by the gas supplier.
Should a supplier sell LP Gas cylinders that are already filled, ready for use, additional requirements are also imposed under the dangerous goods legislation. Information in relation to storage and licensing is available from the Helpline.
