Explosives are the only dangerous good specifically designed to cause maximum physical damage. Modern explosives have evolved and been refined by industry. Our increasing knowledge in various disciplines of chemistry and physics has enabled explosives to be completely safe in the hands of the person who has studied and who has practical experience with them.
All explosives handled in the course of blasting operations shall be under the direct supervision of a permitted shot-firer. The responsibility of the shot-firer shall not cease until s/he is satisfied that there is no danger and the 'All Clear' signal is given.
The shot-firer should be familiar with the specific provisions of Part 5 of the Dangerous Substances (Safe Handling) Regulations 2009 which deals specifically with the use of explosives.
All applicants must attend an approved shot-firers training course. Contact Workplace Standards Tasmania Helpline to obtain details on approved training providers.
All persons applying for a shot-firing permit must be granted a 'Character clearance' from Workplace Standards Tasmania.
