Vibration

Vibration is the rapid motion to and fro of an object such as a pneumatic drill, chainsaw, tractor seat or factory floor.

It is convenient to split the effects of vibration on the human body into two categories:

When Low Frequency Vibration is experienced, a worker's whole body may be affected by the oscillations, resulting in upset digestion. A general feeling of weakness and lassitude may be felt and/or visual acuity may be affected.

High Frequency Vibration tends to have an effect limited to that part of the body exposed to or in contact with the vibrating equipment. So although the damage is local, it may have a marked effect on the soft tissue and the blood vessels of the area, and reduce the sensitivity to continued vibration, pain, temperature, and associated senses.

Vibration disease occurs after prolonged exposure to either high or low frequency vibration.

Methods of reducing or eliminating vibration damage may include:

  • automation;
  • remote control;
  • lowering the strength of the vibrating source;
  • reducing the transmitted vibration;
  • use of personal protective equipment;
  • proper machinery and plant maintenance;
  • work rest schedules for the operators; and
  • regular medical checks for workers.
