Confined spaces

The definition of a confined space is contained in Schedule 1 of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations 1998.

Safe entry into confined spaces to perform work is governed by the requirements of AS/NZS 2865: Safe working in a confined space and is called up as a direct reference in the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations 1998.

AS2865 provides guidance in eliminating or minimizing the need to enter confined spaces and in avoiding exposure to hazards which may be experienced where entry to a confined space is necessary. It also includes sections dealing with risk identification and assessment, monitoring prior to entry, education and training as well as rescue and first aid. Appendices provide additional guidance for cleaning and precautions needed when undertaking hot work. A sample entry permit and risk assessment are provided, as is a typical checklist.
