Recording electrical work

There are requirements under the Occupational Licensing (Electrical Work) Regulations 2008 regarding the recording of electrical work. The major ones are that

  • the person responsible for electrical work must keep a record of all electrical work for at least 10 years. This would normally be the electrical contractor.
  • this person is required to give a copy of that record to the customer. That is the person the electrical work was performed for.

Note: The customer may be a builder in which case we suggest a duplicate copy also be provided to the owner.

Both these requirements apply to all electrical work, no matter how minor.

Until the introduction and use of the New Certificate of Electrical Compliance (CEC), WST will allow the following to occur.

  • The Electrical Installation Notice (EIN) in legible writing can be used as the record
  • A photocopy may be given to the customer as their copy

If you wish to use a copy of your invoice or another method to record your electrical work and supply the customer with a copy, you should ensure it is an approved form. The notification listed below will provide you with the minimum details required.
