Standard installations

A Standard Gas Installation is an installation:

• within a *class 1a, residential premises, a caravan, or a mobile home, containing Type A gas appliances only; or
• within a *class 2 or 4 residential premises not exceeding 3 storeys containing Type A gas appliances only; or
• within a *class 5 or 6 premises not exceeding 3 storeys containing Type A gas appliances only; and in which the total gas consumption of the appliances does not exceed 500 megajoules an hour; and/or in which the length of pipe from the gas supply point to the furthest appliance does not exceed 50 metres.

Class 1a: residential premises (class 1 buildings are not to be located above or below another dwelling, or class of building other than a private garage).

Class 2: a building that includes more than one dwelling, each of which is generally solely occupied by one or more people to the exclusion of others.

Class 4: applies to some types of accommodation within a *class 5-9 building (i.e. caretakers flat within a building or accommodation over or otherwise connected to a shop)

Class 5: professional chambers or suites, lawyers’ offices, government offices, accountants offices

Class 6: a building where goods or services are directly sold to the public (i.e. service station, restaurant, shops)

The gas-fitter must:

• complete a certificate of compliance (gas-fitting notice)
• ensure that the work on the standard gas installation has been carried out in accordance with any relevant standard
• submit copies of certificate to following persons
• • the signed white copy of the Certificate of Compliance to the Director of Gas Safety
  • within 48 hours of undertaking the work provide the green copy to the person on whose behalf the work was carried out or the owner of the gas installation and
  • within 48 hours forward the blue copy to the Gas Distributor
  • keep the yellow and pink copy for at least 5 years.
