Complex gas installations

A Complex Gas Installation is an installation:
  • within a *class 5 & 6 premises;
  • in which the total gas consumption of the appliances exceeds 500 megajoules an hour; and/or in which the length of pipe from the gas supply point to the furthest appliance exceeds 50 metres; and/or if the *class 5 & 6 buildings exceeding 3 storeys; and
  • within any *class 1b, 3, 7, 8, 9 or 10 building; and
  • any installation containing a Type B appliance.

*within the meaning of the Building Code of Australia

Class 1B: a small guesthouse, boarding house or the like

Class 3: a building providing accommodation for unrelated people

Class 5: professional chambers or suites, lawyers’ offices, government offices, accountants offices

Class 6: a building where goods or services are directly sold to the public (i.e. service station, restaurant, shops)

Class 7: car park, warehouse or building used for the display of goods or produce for sale by wholesale

Class 8: factories, laboratories, buildings used for altering or repairing, potteries, food manufacturers (except restaurants, which are *class 6) or buildings used for the packing of produce

Class 9: healthcare buildings, assembly buildings (i.e. theatres, halls, schools, child minding centres, sports complex or bus and railway stations, day-care surgeries)

Class 10: non-habitable building

The gasfitter must complete the following
  • Application for acceptance before commissioning
  • installations marked by an asterix (*) on the gasfitting notice require an APPLICATION to the Director of Gas Safety for ACCEPTANCE before commissioning.
  • must complete the gas consumers details, details of qualified gasfitter, notification of gas installation and details of work undertaken sections.
  • forward the yellow copy of the gas fitting notice with the appropriate APPLICATION for ACCEPTANCE to Workplace Standards Tasmania a minimum of fourteen days prior to commissioning of the installation.
  • Do not sign the statement or certificate of compliance
Statement of compliance
  • must ensure that the work on the accepted installation has been carried out in accordance with any relevant standard or condition specified in the ACCEPTANCE
  • the signed white copy of the Statement of Compliance to the Director of Gas Safety.
  • within 48 hours of undertaking the work provide the green copy to the person on whose behalf the work was carried out or the owner of the gas installation
  • the blue copy to the gas supplier.
  • must keep the pink copy for at least 5 years
