Tasmanian Forest Industries Training Board (TFITB) Forest Operator Assessment and Licensing Scheme

In accordance with regulation 39(3)(d) of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations 1998, the Director of Industry Safety has approved the Forest Operator Assessment and Licensing Scheme as an industry based accreditation scheme.

The Scheme provides for the setting of assessment standards; the issuing of licences for different categories of operators of forest equipment; and the accreditation of trainers and assessors who undertake the training of operators.

The Director determined that the operation of the following items of equipment were "specified tasks" for the purposes of the Regulations:

Specified Tasks
  • Dozer
  • Fulghum Log Handler
  • Mechanical Harvesting
  • Traxcavator
  • Loader
  • Cable Logging
  • Skidder
  • Grader
  • Excavator
  • Chainsaw

For each of these licence categories, an assessment of appropriate underpinning knowledge is required. In addition, the tasks associated with tree felling and fire safety are included.

Operators performing "specified tasks" approved under the system must hold a certificate of competency issued by the TFITB.
