Provisional electrician's licence

Provisional electrician’s licences are typically issued in three categories and not for a period exceeding 12 months.

When issued to applicants in (a) or (b) below all electrical work performed under the licence shall be supervised by a licensed electrical technician.

  • Persons who have made substantial progress towards meeting the criteria for an electrical technician’s licence and are likely to complete the additional training within a 12 month period.
  • Persons who hold an Australian Recognised Trade Certificate as an "electrical mechanic" issued by Trades Recognition Australia enabling them to gain "on the job" and Wiring Rules experience. (This is the normal process for migrants with an electrical trade background)
  • University graduates in Electrical (power) Engineering. Restricted to those who wish to perform electrical work on their own home.
