The Director of Building Control

The Director of Building Control has responsibility for:

  • Provision of professional and technical building and plumbing advice to Government, councils, industry and the public on a daily basis. It also provides training on the legislation, codes and standards to professions, industry associations and local government.
  • Provision of professional, technical or policy advice to the Department on technical issues affecting the building and plumbing industries. These include matters relating to landslip, flooding, bushfires, access, residential aged care facilities, etc. A watching brief is required under the legislation to ensure building regulation consolidation. This is an ongoing task due to the National Competition Policy Regulatory Reviews taking place in Australia.
  • The development and maintenance of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) including the Tasmanian Appendix through membership of the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) and of the Building Codes Committee and other various ABCB Committees.
  • The development and maintenance of MP52, Manual of Authorisation Procedures for Plumbing and Drainage Products.
  • Input into relevant Australian Standards through the ABCB (Over 70 standards are called up in the BCA and are reviewed and updated regularly).
  • Providing advice in the development and maintenance of Australian Standards through its membership of several Standards Australia Water Safety Committees such as on-site wastewater disposal management and systems, and national plumbing and drainage standards.
  • The development and maintenance of the Tasmanian Plumbing Code.
