Helping new workers and their employers

Are you
  • starting your first job?
  • a trainee or apprentice?
  • re-entering the workforce after a break for study or family commitments?
  • a work experience student, vocational education and training (VET) student, or a student doing a workplace learning program while still attending school?
  • changing careers?
  • relocating to a new department, workplace or location within the same company?

Or are you an employer, manager or supervisor of these people; or perhaps a secondary school teacher preparing students for work or work placement?

If so, Workplace Standards Tasmania has resources to help you focus on some of the health and safety aspects of being a new worker.

Why new workers have different needs

Starting a new job isnt easy. Theres so much to learn from the bosss name to the filing system and the all-important location of the tearoom.

The workplace can be a dangerous place where new workers are faced with hazards such as moving machinery, knives, heat, chemicals and stress in their day-to-day tasks.

Young workers in particular are vulnerable because although theyre eager to impress their boss and new workmates, their life skills and levels of experience and judgment are not well developed.

The Communication and Education Consultant is available to meet with

  • teachers and/or their students who are preparing for work or work placement
  • job placement agencies and work skills development programs

You will hear thought-provoking messages to help you and your new workers understand the importance of health and safety, and the impact a workplace injury or illness can have on their life and the lives of their families and co-workers.
