Long Service Leave is a leave entitlement granted to employees for "long service" to an employer. Entitlements are contained in either state legislation or in federal awards or agreements. In Tasmania, the main legislation covering employees in the private sector is the Long Service Leave Act 1976.
If a federal award or agreement applies to the business it is advisable to check with WorkChoices to determine whether there are federal long service leave provisions applicable, but it is important to note that even if your business is subject to a federal award you may still be covered by the Long Service Leave Act 1976.
Employees in the State Service are covered by the Long Service Leave (State Employees) Act 1994.
Most employees in the construction industry are covered by Construction Industry (Long Service) Act 1997. This fund is administered by Tasbuild.
